This Nebraska cattlewoman guided Cooksley Clear Creek Farm for decades, and it remains on land her family has owned for more than a century.

Raising purebred Shorthorn cattle and Thoroughbred horses was the late Mary Bell Cooksley’s lifelong passion. Making her livelihood on land homesteaded by her ancestors in the early 1800s, Cooksley’s background in agriculture and rural life gave her the strength to raise six children and continue running her family’s cattle business after her husband’s death. She was 91 when she passed away in October of 2011.

Where the Teton River comes out of the Rockies in northern Montana, there’s a high ridge to the north with a scattered growth of low, twisted cedar dotting it, and beyond that ridge in a wide, treeless flat, a stone foundation for a house, some long, low log-stables and the last of a set of pole-corrals. This is all that marks the site of the old Hoy place, a ranch with a history.

The women who competed or sold horses at the seventh annual Art of the Cowgirl this past February definitely had the best seat in the house. It’s pretty tough to beat the experience of riding, roping, showing or selling a good horse in the Arizona winter sunshine — especially when the alternative was chopping ice and pitching hay back home.
