Smooth As A Cat Laid to Rest

DATE POSTED:February 23, 2024

EquiStat Elite $36 Million Sire Smooth As A Cat has died at the age of 25. Kyle Manion, Manion Ranch reported his beloved stallion Smooth As A Cat was laid to rest February 1, 2024. This 2005 National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Horse of the Year, as with any older horse, had begun to show his age, especially two weeks before his passing. A few months ago, he was brought back to the ranch to spend some time at home with his family where he enjoyed being turned out, loved on, and fed treats.

As of February 23, he had sired the earners of over $36 million. His top earners include Smooth Asa Zee ($618,712, out of Zee Dualy, by Dual Pep); NCHA Super Stakes Non Pro Champion Reystylin Smooth ($450,467, out of out of Rey N Style, by Dual Smart Rey); Arosesuchaclatter ($324,471 out of Mates Irish Rose x Smart Mate), 2015 Open NCHA Horse of The Year Smooth Talkin Style ($305,284, out of Stylish Play Lena, by Docs Stylish Oak).

During his career, Smooth As A Cat never missed a show due to injury. In his entire life, he never experienced any unsoundness-related discomfort. Consequently, when Smooth As A Cat began exhibiting the signs of malady, the family adhered to the stance they had taken long ago – Smooth As A Cat would not have a prolonged, uncomfortable decline.

“Out of our profound love and appreciation for him, we made the heartbreaking decision,” Kyle commented.

Before Smooth As A Cat was moved to Weatherford to fulfill his breeding duties, he stood at Manion Ranch where he happily interacted with the family throughout the day. So, when Smooth As A Cat returned home, it was a joyful reunion for all.

“We take pride and comfort in knowing he lived a wonderful life, was deeply loved by not only our family, but also a legion of fans and supporters,” Kyle said.

After saying goodbye to their once-in-a lifetime horse, the Manion family looks forward to watching Smooth As A Cat’s babies, and enjoying the gratification that comes from seeing their progress. Stamped with his athleticism, charismatic personality, and competitive spirit they’re easy to spot.

Since Smooth As A Cat has a large amount of frozen semen banked, and to honor him by continuing to build his legacy, the 2024 breeding season (and each season thereafter) will be in full swing. His first breeding is $2,500 with the second breeding offered at half price.
