Lone Woolf & Wesley Galyean back on the Championship Podium

DATE POSTED:February 21, 2024

2023 National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Championship Futurity Champions Lone Woolf & Wesley Galyean made their second debut of 2024 at the Arbuckle Mountain Futurity in Ardmore, Oklahoma. The accomplished pair landed in the championship slot once again and left Ardmore with more hardware to add to their trophy case.

“We got cut clean and the rest of it was on him,” Galyean summed up their show strategy.

“The cows were a little strong, a little tough, and he did a really good job at being quick and fast across the cows to control them,” Galyean continued.

Lone Woolf (Metallic Rebel x A Little Reylena x Dual Rey) is bred and owned by Billy Wolf. Galyean convinced Wolf not to sell the horse as a yearling. After seeing his raw athletic talent, Galyean knew the horse had major potential. They marked a 226.5 to win in Ardmore.

Galyean seems still in awe of the young stallion’s athletic ability, but is happy to enjoy the ride.

“I’m very blessed and fortunate to ride a horse like that,” said Galyean. “They don’t come along often so I’m trying not to take anything for granted.”

The EquiStat Elite $6 Million Rider has plans to take Lone Woolf to The American Performance Horseman on March 8. The premiere event would be a major outing for a four-year-old horse.

“That’s my plan as long as everything keeps going fine. I want to make sure I’m keeping him in the right frame of mind,” Galyean said. “Being that young of a horse I just need to make sure I protect him. His body and his mind.”

There are many opportunities for trainers to show off their derby horses, but none quite like competing at Globe Life Field.

Reserve Champion

EquiStat Elite $6 Million rider Adan Banuelos was close behind. He marked a 225 in the finals on Katteye (Dual Smart Rey x Kattalyst x Metallic Cat), owned and bred by the Ten/27 Ranch, to take home $28,700.

Banuelos will also be showing during The American Performance Horseman in March.
