On September 25, Dust Cutter and Kenny Platt rode into the herd at the Pacific Coast Cutting Association (PCCHA) Futurity for the fifth time during the week. This time, they left the arena champions.
Five runs in a week can be too much for some three-year-olds but EquiStat Elite $3 Million Rider Kenny Platt said Dust Cutter (Smooth As A Cat x Play Bling x Little Haida Playboy) just kept getting better.
“He’s a really, really, really, really tough horse and it’s helped him at the futurity here, because he doesn’t have any quit in him,” Platt said. “It helps when they’re like that sometimes because they don’t weaken when that pressure is on them and at these early futurities there’s a lot of pressures.”
The pressure was on in Vegas but the chips fell right for Dust Cutter and Platt more than once. In the Super Futurity, which took place earlier in the week, the duo marked a 224 in the finals to earn the Reserve Championship worth $40,000. Then, in the PCCHA Holy Cow Performance Horses Futurity finals, they marked a 223.5 for the championship and another big payout of $21,000.
Platt was extremely excited to find this level of success for longtime customer Karen True of Glenrock, Wyoming.
“The True’s have had horses with me, I think since I was 18 years old, so nearly 18 years,” Platt said. “They’re awesome customers and I actually raised Dust Cutter here at my house and he’s the last one out of that mare.”
Platt appreciates the longtime commitment and knows how special owners like that are.
“So many times people aren’t loyal in this business and they’ve always had one or two horses in training with me, they always just great customers,” Platt said. “They let me do whatever I want to do and it’s cool to get a win for people like that.”
Futurity Reserve ChampionOverbrook, Oklahoma trainer Cass Tatum took home the reserve championship and a check worth $18,500. Just a mere half-point behind Platt with a 223, he and See Demtootsie Roll (Rollz Royce x Classy CD Cat x High Brow Cat) are off to a good start in their futurity run for owners VP Cutting Horses LLC of Houston, Texas.
