Road to the Horse is passionate about inspiring the next generation of horsemen and horsewomen, and was proud to present the 2025 Collegiate Colt Starting Challenge at the Idaho Horse Expo, held April 4–6 at the Ford Idaho Horse Park. This exciting event offered a unique educational opportunity in the art of colt starting, as three collegiate teams competed for a share of the $6,000 cash purse.
The collegiate teams participating in the event included New Mexico Junior College, coached by C.D. Wilcox; Asbury University, coached by Jesse Westfall; and Colorado State University, coached by Alex Parsaye. Generously donating their time and expertise as judges were Donald Archer, Wade Black, Shamus Haws, Debbie Shearn, and Penny Turner.
“There’s no greater way to build a legacy than by investing in the future,” said Tammy Sronce, Director of Operations for Road to the Horse. “We were honored to partner with the Idaho Horse Expo to create a remarkable platform for showcasing top collegiate teams. The level of horsemanship and sportsmanship demonstrated by all three teams was truly inspiring.”
Throughout the event, each team was paired with a filly from Bar 71 Ranch. The competition unfolded over three round pen sessions, culminating in a final round that featured both rail work and an obstacle course. All three collegiate teams demonstrated exceptional horsemanship in a tightly contested challenge that came down to the final round to determine the winner.
Colorado State University secured victories in Rounds One, Three, and Four, while New Mexico Junior College claimed the top score in Round Two.
With a total of 1,163.5 points aboard MADISON BE GUNSMART, Colorado State University claimed the overall championship. New Mexico Junior College followed with 1,070.5 points riding FIRST GUNS N ROSE, and Asbury University placed third with 1,055.5 points on MADISON IS A PLAYGUN. All three fillies were sired by WILLY B GUN SMART (PLAYGUN X COW SMART HIGH BROW).
Colorado State University Equine Coach Alex Parsaye was impressed by her team and grateful for the opportunity for the students to gain valuable, hands-on experience.
“I am incredibly proud of my team! The results from this weekend are a testament to the hard work and dedication the girls put in leading up to the competition,” stated Colorado State University Equine Coach Alex Parsaye. “This success also reflects the strong foundation provided by the CSU Legends of Ranching program. Go Rams!”
