Outside The Pen: Lone Woolf

With his quick feet and legendary pedigree, Lone Woolf took the cutting pen by storm when he won the 2023 National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity.

The roan stallion is building his show record through his 4-year-old year. He’s already grasped more champion and reserve champion titles and is now on his way to the NCHA Super Stakes Semi Finals.

Lone Woolf shares a special connection with his regular rider, Wes Galyean. EquiStat Elite $6 Million Rider Wes Galyean could see the horse’s potential as a yearling. Now, going down the road, Galyean is trying to piece together the best opportunities to show off the young stallion while still maintaining his mental and physical wellness.

Quarter Horse News talked with trainer Wes Galyean to learn more about what Lone Woolf is like outside the pen.

“He’s a little more alpha. He’s got a pep in his step so he’s got some go to him, he’s not as sensitive or passive, he’s a little more alpha.”

Personality towards showing?
“He’s a go getter. Every day he comes out a little spicy, so it’s just always trying to get him in the right mind frame to where he needs to be to succeed at a high level.”

Best friend, human or horse?
“Sammy Gillis (his loper) loves him, and he loves her. And we keep him next to a couple geldings too so I think he gets along with them.”

What does he do the best?
“He’s very athletic, very. light footed, very dynamic and very talented. And he seems like he’s got a lot of go to him so he’s not going to get too tired or numb and he’ll be able to succeed at a high level.”
